How to make a bar graph

  1. Add your data. Paste cells from Excel or Google Sheets, open a CSV file, or type one row per bar, such as March 61.
  2. Name it. Add a title that states the point, and a subtitle with the units, source or time period.
  3. Pick what to highlight. The largest or last bar is shown in full color and the others are softened, so readers see the takeaway first.
  4. Choose a size. 16:9 fits slides, 1:1 and 4:5 fit social posts. Pick a light, dark or transparent background.
  5. Export. Download a PNG or SVG, copy the image straight into a document, or copy the embed code for your website.

Data you can paste

The tool reads labels and numbers in most common formats. Columns can be separated by tabs (what spreadsheets copy), commas, semicolons or spaces.

Region, 2025, 2026
North, 42, 58
South, 35, 41
East, 61, 73
  • One number column makes a simple bar graph.
  • Two to four number columns make a grouped (double, triple) bar graph. A header row names each group in the legend.
  • Symbols such as $, € and % and thousands separators such as 1,250 are cleaned up automatically. Add units back with the Before numbers and After numbers fields.
  • If a label contains numbers, such as Q1 2026, separate the columns with a tab or comma.

When to use a bar graph

A bar graph compares amounts across separate categories: sales by region, votes by option, visits by page. The length of each bar shows the value, which makes it the easiest chart to read accurately.

Your data Best chart
Amounts for separate categories Bar graph
Long category names, or more than about 10 categories Horizontal bar graph
Two or more values per category, such as this year vs last year Grouped (double) bar graph
A value changing over many points in time Line graph
Shares of one total, with only a few parts Pie chart or stacked bar

Tips for a clearer bar graph

  • Start the axis at zero. Bar length is the value, so a cut-off axis exaggerates differences. This tool always includes zero.
  • Sort the bars from largest to smallest unless the categories have a natural order, such as months.
  • Highlight one thing. One strong color for the bar that matters and softer bars for context beats a rainbow of colors.
  • Turn long labels sideways. Horizontal bars keep long names readable without rotating text.
  • Skip 3D and heavy gridlines. They make values harder to compare, not easier.
  • Put the point in the title. “East grew fastest in 2026” tells readers more than “Revenue by region”.

Embed a bar graph on your website

Click Embed and paste the code into any page, blog post or CMS that accepts HTML, including WordPress, Webflow, Ghost and Notion embeds. The graph stays sharp on every screen size and shows a tooltip when readers hover over a bar.

The data and settings are stored in the link itself, after the # sign. Nothing is saved on our servers, so there is no account to create and no view limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is this bar graph maker free?

Yes. Every feature is free, with no sign-up, no daily limit and no watermark. You can turn off the small xorbin.com credit before you download or embed.

Is a bar graph the same as a bar chart?

Yes. Bar graph and bar chart are two names for the same chart. Some tools call vertical bars a column chart and horizontal bars a bar chart; this tool makes both.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. The graph is drawn in your browser. Share links and embed codes keep the data in the part of the URL after the # sign, which browsers never send to the server.

How do I paste data from Excel or Google Sheets?

Select the cells, including the label column and an optional header row, copy them, and paste into the data box. Columns copied from a spreadsheet are separated by tabs, which the tool detects automatically.

Can I make a horizontal bar graph?

Yes. Set Orientation to Horizontal. In Auto mode the tool switches to horizontal bars on its own when labels are too long to fit under vertical bars.

How do I make a double or grouped bar graph?

Add a second number column, for example last year and this year. Up to four columns are drawn as grouped bars, and a header row becomes the legend.

Does it support negative values?

Yes. Negative values are drawn below (or to the left of) a zero line, so profit and loss or change from a baseline reads correctly.

Should I download PNG or SVG?

Use PNG at 2x for slides, documents and social posts. Use SVG when the graph will be printed or scaled, or when you want to edit it in a design tool such as Figma or Illustrator.

Can I edit my bar graph later?

Yes. Copy the share link: it contains the data and every setting, so opening it later restores the graph exactly as you left it.
